Chinese Five Spice Chicken Drumsticks
Chicken drumsticks are such an easy comfort food loved by children. They are brilliant for lunch boxes, picnics and birthday parties, as well as day-to-day suppers. My children love these Chinese five spice chicken drumsticks as they are slightly sweet and sticky with mild spices.
Organic chicken drumsticks are cheaper than organic chicken breasts even when you take the bone into account, so these make going organic more economical. I often cook these in bulk for parties and during the summer holidays, when there are endless opportunities for picnics and days out.
I usually use Clearspring Tamari soya sauce in this recipe, which is a lovely mellow gluten-free and wheat-free Japanese soy sauce made from organic fermented soya.
If you need to avoid all sources of soya or glutamate, for your children then a fantastic alternative are Coconut Aminos which are bursting with flavour and super healthy! Coconut aminos are made from the sap of a coconut tree that exudes from the coconut blossoms. This sap is raw, has a very low glycaemic index, and it is an abundant source of 17 amino acids, minerals and vitamins. It is a raw “enzymatically-alive” product aged and blended with sun dried, mineral-rich sea salt, hand gathered from pristine waters near the southern islands of the Philippine coast.

Chinese Five Spice Chicken Drumsticks
- 8 drumsticks Chicken
- 2 tbsp Tamari soya sauce (or Coconut aminos if you are soya-free or SCD/GAPS/Paleo or need to keep glutamte levels down.)

- 1 tbsp Honey (Runny honey is best)
- 1 tsp Chinese Five Spice
- Mix the soya sauce, mustard, honey and Chinese five spice together in a bowl.
- Pour the sticky mixture over the chicken drumsticks and coat well.
- Leave to marinade in a baking pan for at least 20 minutes (a few hours is even better).
- Place in a 200 degree centigrade oven for 35 minutes until cooked through.
Try to use organic ingredients wherever you can.
Serve with sweet potato chips and green vegetables for supper, or on their own with a picnic.
There will be some extra sweet sticky sauce at the bottom of the baking pan. Keep this to pour over the drumsticks to use as a yummy dip.
