The Ultimate Porridge Booster

If you or your child love to eat porridge at breakfast, and you want to give it a nutritious boost, then this is where I would start. Make a batch of this ultimate porridge booster and freeze in ice-cubes; then simply pop one or more cubes into the saucepan when cooking the porridge.

This ice-cube hack is a wonderful way to include fruit, nuts, seeds, and even some cauliflower into a steaming bowl of oats, without changing the colour, texture, or taste! Once you are confident that a single cube has been a winner, build in one more cube next time. It’s a brilliant idea for highly selective eaters or simply if you are in a rush in the morning and need to grab a porridge booster out of the freezer. See the nut-free option in the notes below.

The Ultimate Porridge Booster

  • 200 g Pear
  • 145 g Cauliflower
  • 2 tbsp Nut Butter ((mixed nuts))
  • 2 tsp Flax Seeds (Linseed) ((milled))
  1. Peel, core and roughly chop the pear. Chop the cauliflower into small pieces. Place the prepared pear and cauliflower into a small saucepan with 200ml water. Put on the hob over a medium heat. Bring to a simmer and continue to simmer for 10 minutes (or until the cauliflower and pear are soft). Drain away the excess water.

  2. Put the drained, cooked cauliflower and pear into a blender with the mixed nut butter and milled flax seeds. Blitz until you have a smooth mixture. Allow to cool, then carefully spoon the mixture into an ice cube tray, cover and freeze.

  3. Add 1-2 cubes per person when cooking porridge for an extra hidden boost!

  • The quantity of cubes and freezing time may vary depending on the size of your ice cube tray.

  • Mixed nut butter can be replaced with your favourite nut butter such as almond or cashew or switch to tahini (sesame paste) or sunflower seed butter if there is a nut allergy
